Naas, Ireland – 10th June 2024

Naas Cycling Club is proud to announce a significant step towards enhancing the safety of our members by equipping our cycling groups with rear-facing radar cameras. This initiative comes in response to an alarming rise in close passes, incidents of dangerous driving and unfortunately the serious injuries and deaths of cyclists on Irish roads.

The rear-facing radar cameras are state-of-the-art devices designed to improve cyclists’ situational awareness and provide valuable evidence in the event of road incidents. These cameras not only alert riders to vehicles approaching from behind but also record video footage that can be crucial for reporting dangerous driving to An Garda Síochána, the Irish police force.

“Our primary concern has always been the safety and well-being of our members,” said Tim Farmer, Chairperson of Naas Cycling Club. “With the increase in close passes and other hazardous interactions with motorists, it is imperative that we take proactive measures to protect our cyclists. The rear facing radar cameras are an excellent tool to help us achieve this goal.”

The decision to adopt this technology was driven by feedback from club members and an analysis of recent incidents. The radar system provides real-time alerts to cyclists, allowing them to react quickly to potential threats. Additionally, the video recording functionality ensures that any dangerous driving behaviour is documented, providing clear evidence for law enforcement authorities.

“Close passes and reckless driving have become too frequent, putting our members at unnecessary risk,” added Martin Carroll, Safety Officer of Naas Cycling Club. “By outfitting our groups with these radar cameras, we aim to deter dangerous driving and ensure that any incidents can be accurately reported and addressed.”

Naas Cycling Club is committed to fostering a safe and enjoyable cycling environment. We believe that the implementation of rear facing radar cameras will not only protect our members but also contribute to a broader culture of safety and accountability on the roads.
